But the big question is… Are they worth it? 🤔

As a real estate professional, I’ve worked with buyers who love the structure and amenities an HOA provides, while others find the rules and fees to be a deal-breaker. 🏘️ Enhanced Neighborhood Appeal

One of the biggest perks of an HOA is that it helps maintain property values by ensuring the community stays clean and visually appealing. No overgrown lawns, peeling paint, or abandoned cars in the driveway—just a beautifully kept neighborhood that homeowners can take pride in.

Access to Amenities

Many HOA communities offer resort-style perks like swimming pools, fitness centers, clubhouses, and playgrounds—all included in your HOA dues! This can be a huge benefit, especially if you love a sense of community and convenience.

Community Standards & Peaceful Living

Want to make sure your neighbor doesn’t suddenly paint their house neon green? 🎨 An HOA enforces rules that keep the community looking consistent and helps avoid disputes over things like loud parties, pet policies, and parking issues.


The Cons of HOA Living

Additional Costs

HOA fees vary widely depending on the community. They can be as low as $50 per month or hundreds of dollars depending on the amenities and services provided. Plus, there’s always the possibility of fees increasing over time or unexpected “special assessments” for major repairs.

Rules & Restrictions

Love personalizing your home? HOAs often have strict guidelines on things like exterior paint colors, landscaping, fences, and even holiday decorations. Before buying, make sure their rules align with your lifestyle!

Potential for Disputes

HOA board members are usually volunteers, but not all boards are created equal. Some are great at managing the community, while others enforce rules unfairly or hit homeowners with surprise fees. It’s always a good idea to talk to current residents and get a feel for how the HOA operates.


My HOA Buyer’s Checklist

Before committing to an HOA property, be sure to:

Review the HOA’s Rules & Regulations – Get a copy of the CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions).
Check Monthly & Annual Fees – Ask if there are any upcoming fee increases.
Assess the HOA’s Financial Health – A well-managed HOA will have reserves for repairs.
Understand the Amenities – Make sure what you’re paying for is worth it.
Talk to Current Residents – They’ll give you honest feedback about HOA management.


My Experience with a Buyer’s Unexpected Dealbreaker

One thing I always remind my buyers is to think beyond the home itself—the community and surroundings matter just as much.
