Brooklyn Renters Checklist: Must-Do Steps Before Moving In!

Moving into a new rental in Brooklyn? Whether you're relocating from another borough or coming from out of state, being prepared can save you time, stress, and money. As a real estate expert and member of REBNY & BNYMLS, I’ve helped countless renters navigate their move-in process. Today, I’m sharing a step-by-step checklist to ensure a smooth transition into your new home—backed by insights from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Real Deal.

Step 1: Confirm Move-In Logistics

Before the big day, double-check all the details with your landlord or property manager:
✔ Verify Your Move-In Date & Time – Some buildings have specific rules.
✔ Reserve the Elevator (If applicable) – Many high-rises require advance booking.
✔ Confirm Parking for Movers – Street parking in Brooklyn can be tricky.
✔ Ask About Renter’s Insurance & Deposits – Some buildings require proof before move-in.

👉 Pro Tip: If your lease requires renter’s insurance, compare quotes from multiple providers before move-in day.

Step 2: Set Up Utilities & Internet

You don’t want to move in and realize you have no power or Wi-Fi! Schedule your setups in advance:
✔ Electricity & Gas: Contact Con Edison (for most Brooklyn properties).
✔ Water & Trash: Confirm with your landlord—some rentals include these.
✔ Internet & Cable: Set up 1-2 weeks early (popular options: Spectrum, Verizon Fios, Optimum).
✔ Renter’s Insurance: Protects your belongings from theft, fire, or damage.

Pro Tip: Some landlords require proof of utility account activation before handing over the keys!

Step 3: Walkthrough & Document Everything

Before unpacking, take a few minutes to inspect the apartment and document any issues:
Take Photos & Videos of:
✔ Walls, floors, ceilings – Check for cracks, stains, or damage.
✔ Appliances – Make sure they work properly.
✔ Bathroom & Kitchen – Test water pressure, flush toilets, check for leaks.
✔ Windows & Doors – Ensure locks function and there are no drafts.

Pro Tip: Email your landlord a copy of your photos/videos. This protects your security deposit when you move out!

Step 4: Change Your Address

Make sure your mail and important documents follow you to your new home:
✔ Update Your Address With:

  • USPS (Mail Forwarding)
  • Banks & Credit Cards
  • Driver’s License (If moving from another state)
  • Insurance (Health, Auto, Renter’s)
  • Online Subscriptions (Amazon, Netflix, etc.)

Pro Tip: If you’re moving from out of state, update your voter registration along with your driver’s license!

Step 5: Meet Your Neighbors & Learn the Rules

A good relationship with your neighbors can make life easier! Take time to:
✔ Introduce yourself – A quick “hello” goes a long way!
✔ Learn trash pickup schedules & recycling rules.
✔ Read your building’s house rules (especially for condos or co-ops).

Final Checklist Recap:

✅ Confirm move-in logistics
✅ Set up utilities & renter’s insurance
✅ Walk through & document everything
✅ Change your address
✅ Meet neighbors & learn building rules
